The United Nation’s Goals for a Sustainable Future
Justo’s was founded with 3 main core values – quality, sustainability and community impact. We are always striving to fulfil these values in everything we do.
In 2015 all United Nations Member countries adopted the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals which provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.
We have identified five Sustainable Development Goals that align closely with our businesses mission and philosophy that we will be focusing energy on now and into the future.
Goal # 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
We donate 1% of all revenues to providing healthy, delicious, plant-based foods to our most vulnerable populations. We have donated over 2 tonnes of our dips to local charity organizations since we began operations in late 2019. (That’s the equivilent of 8,000 jars!)
Goal #5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
We fund a certified non-profit that provides entrepreneurial support for women in countries within South East Asia. These women empower their communities to create income through the proper collection, and recycling of plastics. (Learn more here). In addition to this, our partnered sales broker, is a women founded, 100% all-star women staffed team.
Goal #12 Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
We decided to package our products in glass jars instead of single-use plastic. Every year, Canadians throw away 3 million tonnes of plastic waste, only 9% of which is recycled. This means the vast majority of plastics end up in landfills and about 29,000 tonnes finds its way into our natural environment.
Goal #13 Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
We are a 1% for the Planet member and have pledged 1% of total revenue to support environmental non-profit organizations. Through this initiative, we are donating to the Plastic Credit Exchange. For every jar of Justo’s purchased, 6 single-use plastic tubs worth of plastic are collected from our environment. In addition to this, we produce solely plant-based food products and are actively creating alternatives for plant-based products.
We have a goal of being carbon neutral by the end of 2023. While carbon offsetting isn’t the answer to climate change, it is a powerful tool to slow the effects of climate change while the world develops more effective technology.
Goal #14 Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development
We are a group of active surfers and coastal lovers – protecting our oceans and waterways is true to our core. By using glass and funding plastic waste collection organizations, we are helping reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans. We also help fund ocean cleanups through the amazing Blue Friday initiative, as well as participating in beach cleanups as an organization.
